• Les gastéropodes n'entrent guère que pour 1 % de ce total, malgré l'importance relative de la consommation de certains haliotis (« abalones » des gourmets américains) surtout dans le Pacifique nord.

Rem. Dans la lang. cour. les coquillages du genre haliotis sont appelés oreilles de mer. Consommés et appréciés princ. sur leur lieu de pêche, en Californie, ils sont aussi exportés; d'où l'emploi occasionnel, au plur., du mot en fr.
ÉTYMOL. — Mot angl.-amér. de Californie « mollusque univalve du genre Haliotis ou crustacé du genre Auris marina » attesté ds DAE 1870 (Amer.
